The Opening

Opening Sentence

Jesus said, "I am the light of the world; whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but have the light of life." John 8:12

Blessed are the pure in heart

Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they shall see their God.
The secret of the Lord is theirs;
their soul is Christ's abode.

The Lord, who left the sky
our life and peace to bring,
to dwell in lowliness with us,
our pattern and our king,

He to the lowly soul
will still himself impart
and for his dwelling and his throne
will chose the pure in heart.

Lord, we your presence seek;
we ask this blessing true:
give us a pure and lowly heart,
a temple fit for you.

Confession

Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God.

Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us;
that we may delight in your will,
and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen.

Versicle and Response

O God, make speed to save us.

O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit
As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Phos hilaron (O Gracious Light)

O gracious light,
pure brightness of the everliving Father in heaven,
O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!
Now as we come to the setting of the sun,
and our eyes behold the vesper light,
we sing your praises, O God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
You are worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices,
O Son of God, O Giver of Life,
and to be glorified through all the worlds.

The Psalms

Psalm 138 or
Coverdale
Confitebor tibi

1I will give thanks to you, O LORD, with my whole heart; *
before the gods I will sing your praise.

2I will bow down toward your holy temple
and praise your Name, *
because of your love and faithfulness;

3For you have glorified your Name *
and your word above all things.

4When I called, you answered me; *
you increased my strength within me.

5All the kings of the earth will praise you, O LORD, *
when they have heard the words of your mouth.

6They will sing of the ways of the LORD, *
that great is the glory of the LORD.

7Though the LORD be high, he cares for the lowly; *
he perceives the haughty from afar.

8Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you keep me safe; *
you stretch forth your hand against the fury of my enemies;
your right hand shall save me.

9The LORD will make good his purpose for me; *
O LORD, your love endures for ever;
do not abandon the works of your hands.

Psalm 139 or
Coverdale
Domine, probasti

1LORD, you have searched me out and known me; *
you know my sitting down and my rising up;
you discern my thoughts from afar.

2You trace my journeys and my resting-places *
and are acquainted with all my ways.

3Indeed, there is not a word on my lips, *
but you, O LORD, know it altogether.

4You press upon me behind and before *
and lay your hand upon me.

5Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; *
it is so high that I cannot attain to it.

6Where can I go then from your Spirit? *
where can I flee from your presence?

7If I climb up to heaven, you are there; *
if I make the grave my bed, you are there also.

8If I take the wings of the morning *
and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,

9Even there your hand will lead me *
and your right hand hold me fast.

10If I say, "Surely the darkness will cover me, *
and the light around me turn to night,"

11Darkness is not dark to you;
the night is as bright as the day; *
darkness and light to you are both alike.

12For you yourself created my inmost parts; *
you knit me together in my mother's womb.

13I will thank you because I am marvelously made; *
your works are wonderful, and I know it well.

14My body was not hidden from you, *
while I was being made in secret
and woven in the depths of the earth.

15Your eyes beheld my limbs, yet unfinished in the womb;
all of them were written in your book; *
they were fashioned day by day,
when as yet there was none of them.

16How deep I find your thoughts, O God! *
how great is the sum of them!

17If I were to count them, they would be more in number
than the sand; *
to count them all, my life span would need to
be like yours.

18Oh, that you would slay the wicked, O God! *
You that thirst for blood, depart from me.

19They speak despitefully against you; *
your enemies take your Name in vain.

20Do I not hate those, O LORD, who hate you? *
and do I not loathe those who rise up against you?

21I hate them with a perfect hatred; *
they have become my own enemies.

22Search me out, O God, and know my heart; *
try me and know my restless thoughts.

23Look well whether there be any wickedness in me *
and lead me in the way that is everlasting.

Gloria Patri

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. Amen.

The Lesson

The Gospel

Luke 18:15-30

15 People were bringing even infants to him that he might touch them; and when the disciples saw it, they sternly ordered them not to do it. 16But Jesus called for them and said, 'Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. 17Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it.'

18 A certain ruler asked him, 'Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?' 19Jesus said to him, 'Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. 20You know the commandments: "You shall not commit adultery; You shall not murder; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; Honor your father and mother."' 21He replied, 'I have kept all these since my youth.' 22When Jesus heard this, he said to him, 'There is still one thing lacking. Sell all that you own and distribute the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.' 23But when he heard this, he became sad; for he was very rich. 24Jesus looked at him and said, 'How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! 25Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.' 26Those who heard it said, 'Then who can be saved?' 27He replied, 'What is impossible for mortals is possible for God.' 28Then Peter said, 'Look, we have left our homes and followed you.' 29And he said to them, 'Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, 30who will not get back very much more in this age, and in the age to come eternal life.'

The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

Canticle 17 The Song of Simeon
Luke 2:29-32 Nunc Dimittis

Lord, you now have set your servant free *
to go in peace as you have promised;

For these eyes of mine have seen the Savior, *
whom you have prepared for all the world to see:

A Light to enlighten the nations, *
and the glory of your people Israel.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

The Creed

The Apostle's Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

For Sound Government

O Lord our Governor, bless the leaders of our land, that we may be a people at peace among ourselves and a blessing to other nations of the earth.

Lord, keep this nation under your care.

To all who have executive authority and to all who have administrative authority, grant wisdom and grace in the exercise of their duties.

Give grace to your servants, O Lord.

To those who make our laws give courage, wisdom, and foresight to provide for the needs of all our people, and to fulfill our obligations in the community of nations.

Give grace to your servants, O Lord.

To the Judges and officers of our Courts give understanding and integrity, that human rights may be safeguarded and justice served.

Give grace to your servants, O Lord.

And finally, teach our people to rely on your strength and to accept their responsibilities to their fellow citizens, that they may elect trustworthy leaders and make wise decisions for the well-being of our society; that we may serve you faithfully in our generation and honor your holy Name.

For yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all. Amen.

For Schools and Colleges

O Eternal God, bless all schools, colleges, and universities, that they may be lively centers for sound learning, new discovery, and the pursuit of wisdom; and grant that those who teach and those who learn may find you to be the source of all truth; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For the Harvest of Lands and Waters

O gracious Father, who open your hand and fills all living things: Bless the lands and waters, and multiply the harvests of the world; let your Spirit go forth, that it may renew the face of the earth; show your loving-kindness, that our land may give her increase; and save us from selfish use of what thou give , that men and women everywhere may give you thanks; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

HYMN HERE

A Prayer of Self-Dedication

Almighty and eternal God, so draw our hearts to you, so guide our minds, so fill our imaginations, so control our wills, that we may be wholly yours, utterly dedicated unto you; and then use us, we pray you, as you will, and always to your glory and the welfare of your people; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

General Thanksgiving

Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen.

A Prayer of St. Chrysostom

Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. Amen.

Hymn: God Be With You

God be with you till we meet again;
By his counsels guide, uphold you;
With his sheep securely fold you.
God be with you till we meet again.
Till we meet, till we meet,
Till we meet at Jesus' feet,
Till we meet, till we meet,
God be with you till we meet again.
