This day the first of days

This day the first of days was made,
when God in light the world arrayed;
or when God's Word arose again
And, conquering death, gave life to all.

Slumber and sleep drive far away;
let us arise to greet the day;
and ere its dawn in heav'n unfold,
our heart's desire to God be told.

For this, O Christ, to you we pray
that you will take our sins away,
and of your lovingkindness grant
whate'er of good our spirits want.

Creator, keep us unbeguiled,
through Jesus Christ, your holy Child;
who, with the Holy Ghost and you
do live and reign forever true.
