Catherine of Genoa (Caterina Fieschi Adorno, 1447 15 September 1510) was an Italian Roman Catholic saint and mystic, admired for her work among the sick and the poor and remembered because of various writings describing both these actions and her mystical experiences.
She was a member of the noble Fieschi family, and spent most of her life and her means serving the sick, especially during the plague which ravaged Genoa in 1497 and 1501. She died in that city in 1510.
Her fame outside her native city is connected with the publication in 1551 of the book known in English as the Life and Doctrine of Saint Catherine of Genoa.
Catherine was born in Genoa in 1447, the last of five children. Catherine wished to enter a convent when about 13; however, the nuns to whom her confessor applied on her behalf refused her on account of her youth, and after this Catherine appears to have put the idea aside without any further attempt. After her father s death in 1463, aged 16, she was married by her parents' wish to a young Genoese nobleman, Giuliano Adorno. The marriage turned out wretchedly.
After ten years of marriage, she was converted by a mystical experience during confession on 22 March 1473. This event marked the beginning of her life of close union with God in prayer, without using forms of prayer such as the rosary. She began to receive Communion almost daily, a practice extremely rare for lay people in the Middle Ages, and she underwent remarkable mental and at times almost pathological experiences.
She combined this situation with unselfish service to the sick in a hospital at Genoa, in which her husband joined her after he, too, had been converted. He later became a Franciscan tertiary, but she joined no religious order.
Her husband's spending had ruined them financially. He and Catherine decided to live in a large hospital in Genoa, and to dedicate themselves to works of charity there. She eventually became manager and treasurer of the hospital.
Towards the end of her life, a Father Marabotti was appointed to be her spiritual guide. He had been a director of the hospital where her husband died in 1497. To him she explained her states, past and present, and he compiled the Memoirs.
She died in 1510, worn out with labours of body and soul.

James Chisholm (September 30, 1815 September 15, 1855) was an Episcopal priest in Portsmouth, Virginia who died of yellow fever after working to assist other persons (of every denomination) stricken by the epidemic.
Chisholm was born in Salem, Massachusetts and moved to Virginia to teach.
He converted to the Episcopal church and was ordained, then served as the first rector of St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth.
In February, 1855, his wife died, leaving him to care for two young sons.
Yellow fever struck Portsmouth and nearby Norfolk in the summer and one of his sons fell ill. Chisholm sent his boys to live with relatives, but returned to the Portsmouth. One of his sons later died.
Almost all other leading citizens left Portsmouth, but the Rev. Chisholm remained to assist those stricken by the epidemic with not only pastoral care, but with food, medical care, and even the digging of graves.
He worked closely with the Rev. Francis Devlin of St. Paul's, the city's Roman Catholic Church, to assist Irish immigrants who were living in "pestilential abodes".
The disease abated in the fall, but Chisholm had been so weakened by his efforts that he himself succumbed at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital.
About 20 people turned out for his funeral which was conducted by a Baptist minister. The Rev. Chisholm is buried in Portsmouth's Cedar Grove cemetery.

Merciful God, you called your priest James Chisholm to sacrifice his life while working amid great suffering and death: Help us, like him, to live by the faith we profess, following in the footsteps of Jesus Christ our Lord; who with the Father and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Remember those who work in these institutions; keep them humane and compassionate; and save them from becoming brutal or callous. And since what we do for those in prison, O Lord, we do for you, constrain us to improve their lot. All this we ask for your mercy's sake. Amen.
Blessed Lord, you ministered to all who came to you: Look with compassion upon all who through addiction have lost their health and freedom. Restore to them the assurance of your unfailing mercy; remove from them the fears that beset them; strengthen them in the work of their recovery; and to those who care for them, give patient understanding and persevering love.
